A metal disk about the size of a coin with a small hole in it, a short length of thread, a top hat or other container.

The production of coins from the air is a trick known to magicians as the Miser’s Dream. Here is a method by which you can perform this fascinating effect. You can use a real coin for this trick but in most countries it is illegal to spoil coins by making holes in them. Push the thread through the hole and tie it into a loop. Loop the thread on your thumb and the coin will hang down on your palm. By jerking the hand upward and catching the coin at the fingertips, you can make it appear that you have caught a coin from the air. Carry the coin to a hat and pretend to drop it inside. All you really do is open out the hand and allow the coin to return to its original position. Repeat the above moves several times but vary your position as you produce each coin — pluck coins from the air, from behind your knee and so on.
